Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS)
The PBIS program has been a driving force behind the positive culture here at SMS. PBIS focuses on promoting positive behavior through school-wide reward systems and by making desired behaviors explicit for students. Through this program, we do expectation tours at the beginning of each year where students visit each area of the school to view a short presentation on what expected behavior looks like. Students receive Spartan Spirit tickets that they can use at our Spartan store and enter to win bi-weekly raffle prizes. Our PBIS program also drives initiatives, like Just Be Kind (JBK), Olweus anti-bullying, and whole and school rallies. PBIS has helped to build relationships and understanding between the student population as well as the faculty. Its continuing goals aren’t to limit problem behaviors but to illicit and promote positive ones instead. With the continued support of everyone involved, PBIS aims to make Sunnyvale Middle a safe and inclusive environment for all Spartans.
Our school motto is Respect, Responsibility, and Right Choices. We work with students to promote these values using the Spartan Spirit Matrix listed below.
